Exodus 3:14

“And God said to Moses,

I AM WHO I AM.”

And He said,

“Thus you shall say to the children of Israel,

I AM has sent me to you.’”

my twocents…

this is truly one of my favorite verses in the whole Bible. i believe that the journey in reading the Bible is really getting to know who God is, and this one verse is where he is literally telling us who He is. although it may sound very ominous, God can only be 100% true. so I think that this statement “I AM WHO I AM” leads with so much depth in meaning. He is the source of being, the source of self, the source of ego/identity, He is the one true identity. apart from God, we cannot be identified and we would not exist. He wills us to live everyday. He is our lifeline, our breath, our heartbeat.

so why is it that there’s such discord between human pride and humility to the Lord? well, by being prideful: attributing wins to the self and living ‘independently and self-sufficiently’, is essentially living a lie. one cannot exist apart from God and cannot attribute any gains solely to the self. so by doing so, the lack of humility to our Creator causes a false sense of self, thus a lost identity. everything that happens in this world is willed by God. we play an active role in a genuine relationship with Him, but at the end of the day, He is our Creator. and the crazy thing about His love, is that He gives us freedom to choose. if we truly choose to live apart from Him, relying solely on ourselves, He will grant that to us. the afterlife that does not include God is hell.

but back to the lie. this thought of living eternally in a hell without God, who is the source of all love and goodness, is the ultimate manifestation of the lie. it’s major denial and what once was thought as self-loving, reveals itself as self-loathing, because one cannot love the self whom he denies. one cannot truly be happy when being self-reliant, apart from others and apart from God, because God didn’t create us that way, so it’s actually chemically impossible. our core makeup is dependency rooted in love. when we choose to credit ourselves and not God, He graciously gives us that freedom to choose, but a life apart from Him is a life without meaning, joy, or love - don't choose that. Humility might feel uncomfortable at the moment, because of our rebellious flesh, but the victory that comes from obedience to the Lord brings all of the joy we can desire.
